Description Jan F. Chadima 2011-07-29 11:40:47 UTC
When connecting IPWireless 4G from T-Mobile (available all over the Europe, not sure about T-Mobile US) I get this in dmesg:

ipw ttyUSB0: IPWireless converter converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
ipwtty 5-2:1.0: device disconnected
usb 5-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 5-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0bc3, idProduct=0001
usb 5-2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 5-2: Product: IPWireless Modem
usb 5-2: Manufacturer: IPWireless, Inc.
usb 5-2: SerialNumber: 352146020199498
usb 5-2: configuration #1 chosen from 2 choices
ipwtty 5-2:1.0: IPWireless converter converter detected
usb 5-2: IPWireless converter converter now attached to ttyUSB0

It shows up in lsusb (see attached), however it never shows up in the NetworkManager menu. Also attaching /var/log/messages. Interesting section of the log seems to be IMHO this:

Jul 29 13:12:22 blecha modem-manager: (ttyUSB0) opening serial device...

Jul 29 13:12:29 blecha NetworkManager[1459]: <info> (ttyUSB0): device state change: 2 -> 3 (reason 0)

What does “failed to look up interface index” mean?

See also bug 450080 which has a lot of comments and some investigation by jklimes into the command set these devices use. I closed it wontfix because i didn't have time for it then but we can reopen it if you like.
