Because if you don't drop the supplemental groups, the program has the ability to write to any file that is group root writable or read any file with group root. Since it changed uid/gid, its clear that the intent was to drop any and all privileges. Since the problem described in this bug report should be resolved in a recent advisory, it has been closed with a resolution of ERRATA.
