desktop showing icon position none

Description Paul Lambert 2011-08-01 18:21:21 UTC
Description of problem: The desktop icons, computer, home folder and trash folder are positioned almost 1" from the left side of the viewport. This is wasting my desktop area since I must use a suboptimal sized window so I can still get to my these desktop icons without closing open windows. On Windows-XP these desktop icons are placed on the left viewport border to a user can maximize the open window space and still access the icons without closing open windows

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

F11-F15

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results:

Expected results: The user should have the capability to move and arrange desktop icons, they should not be permanently snapped to a grid. If the user selects show computer, home folder and trash folder on desktop the default location should be as close to the left border as possible.

Comment 2 Paul Lambert 2011-08-29 13:20:02 UTC
I did by chance discover how to move the desktop icons. The menu item is called "keep aligned." To keep the same theme as the other desktop option, "Organize Desktop by Name", changing the ability to move desktop icons should be entitled Align Desktop (Icons) by Grid" or something similar. Typically, alignment of objects in drawing packages refer to this as "snap to grid" or something similar.
The current title of "Keep Aligned" fails to inform the user as to what is being aligned or imply to what it is being aligned to.

Comment 3 Paul Lambert 2011-11-24 04:30:34 UTC
Just to clarify this bug, I can relocate the icons by changing the keep aligned parameter to off. However, when I plug in a USB device their icon defaults to the keep fixed position. The system should detect the current value of keep aligned and fix the newly mounted icon in accordance with this setting. It could do this by finding the last icon on the desktop and inherit these settings as the default. I can have a window open and still see my icons to the left of this window. However, when I plug in a USB disk the icon moves to the default position which is hidden behind my open window.

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 18:50:50 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
