Did some more testing and I think the problem is with the modem select software. The system probes for a modem and then throws up a panel that says "Can't find a modem". When that disappears it has set up a "generic" modem which, of course does not work. When I try to make the setup active it tries the un-setup modem and when that fails it goes into limbo. So perhaps the bug should be changed to only the software that selects a modem. Well I read the referance manual and found out which files are involved with the network system. I found the modem setup is a total bug. I found I could write a useful wvdial.conf and ifcfg.ppp0 which are the main files. So this afternoon I got the dialup internet working. I need to learn a lot more. Redhat linux has a long way to go before it's a threat to Microsoft! This must be a significant problem to lots of users, it is a common topic on the Vahalla list. If you have software to correct this problem I will be glad to beta test it on my version 7.3 linux. Red Hat apologizes that these issues have not been resolved yet. We do want to make sure that no important bugs slip through the cracks. Red Hat Linux 7.3 and Red Hat Linux 9 are no longer supported by Red Hat, Inc. They are maintained by the Fedora Legacy project (http://www.fedoralegacy.org/) for security updates only. If this is a security issue, please reassign to the 'Fedora Legacy' product in bugzilla. Please note that Legacy security update support for these products will stop on December 31st, 2006. If this is not a security issue, please check if this issue is still present in a current Fedora Core release. If so, please change the product and version to match, and check the box indicating that the requested information has been provided.
