Let me correct myself. The freeze happens when X is started. I was under the impression it occurred after GNOME or KDE were up as well, but I was wrong. It begins as soon as X begins. cc'ing our X maintainer for input Could you attach your X config file, and your X server log. Also attach your /var/log/messages from after a crash. I tried both disabling the sound card itself and disabling the sound server in hopes that that would be the problem (due to a dialog box that always comes up on X start that says there is a problem with the sound server), but no go... Once KDE starts (if you dont touch the mouse, that is) sometimes it'll freeze as soon as you move the mouse, and other times it'll freeze while you are trying to open a program... Attempted another reinstall of Linux - unfortunately, it failed to work, the same problem again. This is getting annoying... One more thing - I made sure the installation media was not the problem - someone else installed using the same CDs and X is working fine for them... They're even running the GIMP... I'm jealous :-D Having checked the /var/log/messages file and the XFree86.0.log right after rebooting after the first crash after the first boot after the reinstallation, I found exactly... nothing. There are no errors... I changed the version - this applies to RH 8.0 as well; Plus, the RH8 installer also freezes in the same way, straight off the CD!! Thanks for the bug report. However, Red Hat no longer maintains this version of the product. Please upgrade to the latest version and open a new bug if the problem persists. The Fedora Legacy project (http://fedoralegacy.org/) maintains some older releases, and if you believe this bug is interesting to them, please report the problem in the bug tracker at: http://bugzilla.fedora.us/ |
