Uhm. I really don't know why using gedit in any way should cause this error -- sure you didn't have an instance of s-c-samba running somewhere? I'm interested in what you did with it, then. You are quite right, I did have the Samba Server Configuration tool open, I don't remember clearly if I had the samba users open or the server settings also.
