Description of problem:
Any function that brings up a file selection dialog causes Blender to crash

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
blender-2.49b-17.fc15.i686

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Blender
2. Try to load, save, import, export a file; or load a font, background image, etc.
3. See a backtrace followed by a memory map appear.
4. Yell an swear at the computer.
  
Actual results:
backtrace and memory map dumped to the console, blender exits

Expected results:
a file selection dialog in one of the panes

F-15 is now EOL, please reproduce with a more recent version
