Description Scott Castaline 2011-10-11 20:11:11 UTC
Description of problem: System randomly freezes with no entries in logs of any problems. System load or memory usage or disk activity seem to have no impact. This originally started shortly after the release of Fedora 15 with the default Gnome3.0 Shell DE. I had switched to KDE since by doing a fresh install, but had recycled my Thunderbird, Firefox, and LibreOffice profile folders onto the reinstall.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 15, kernel 2.6.40.6-0.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible: Very random. It can happen as many as three times in one day and then last for seven to ten days without a single incident.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Nothing repeatable to cause the freeze
2.
3.

Actual results:

Expected results:

Additional info: I have kept a handwritten log since September 7, 2011, tracking what I was doing, date and approximate time of freeze (the digital clock on screen will suddenly stop, I have seconds being displayed and they will suddenly stop), approximate time of reboot by checking date/time stamp in first log entry during the reboot and the last entry in the log at time of freeze. I would say that about 99% of the time I'll have Clementine playing from my music library on the hard drive with window maximized on Desktop #2 and when the freeze happens the track playing at that time will continue and then the player will stop before advancing to the next track. On one of the freezes I was printing a 200 page document with another small print job following that one. The printer was printing about the 95th page when the freeze occurred, it completed all 200 pages and then stopped prior to starting the next job. On the reboot the printer started right away onto the next job and no errors were in the logs.

My hardware is as follows:
Motherboard: MSI-7640 - 890FXA-GD70
Processor: AMD Phenom II Quad-Core 965
Memory: Corsair DDR3 8GB (4x2GB) (9-9-9-24) *
ODD = ASUS SATA on port 7
HDD1 = WD640GB SATAII on port 1
HDD2 = WD1TB SATAII on port 2
HDD3 = WD1TB SATAII on port 3
HDD4 = WD1TB SATAIII on port 4

HDD1 has 2 partitions with part 1 = 500MB /boot
                           part 2 = LUKS/LVM VG1 with about 8 LVs
HDD2 has 1 partition = LUKS/LVM VG2 with 2 LVs (exclusive audio files)
HDD3 & HDD4 each have 1 partition = LUKS/LVM VG3 with 2 LVs (exclusive video files)

Also I usually have on DT1 Firefox running with at least 2 tabs pinned, Thunderbird, GnuCash, LibrOffice Calc with a working spreadsheet open, KCalc (usually minimized), Krusader (also usually minimized), and KeePassX ( which is also normally minimized). I have occasionally have had 2 - 3 windows open on DT3 and DT4.

If it helps I can post what I have manually logged as I have tracked this.

Can you try installing kernel-debug-2.6.40.6-0.fc15? That has the debugging options enabled and might provide a backtrace or additional information.

Just installed kernel-debug-2.6.40.6-0.fc15.x86_64 and will be rebooting after I post this comment. Is there anything else that I need to do?

Today my system has frozen twice. First time at ~ 09:23:22 EDT with about 1H 25M 55S of uptime and the second time was at ~ 13:12:31 EDT roughly 3H 38M 53S. What do I need to do at this point? Is there any additional info I should be looking for in the log files?

Does it still happen with the 2.6.41 kernel?

Comment 5 Scott Castaline 2011-11-29 13:29:53 UTC
Just recently I had installed Fedora 16 (fresh install) using XFCE for my DE. It worked fine for several days until after a SELinux relabel of my system. At that time the window manager went bonkers, no more window title bars, could not move windows, etc. I then have done a fresh install of F-16 using LXDE for my DE. At this time all seems to be working, I plan on trying KDE again soon. I do have it on my test bench system (Fedora 16) and have not encountered any freezes. I also don't have all that I have on my main system, so it may not be a complete test to see if the problem still exists.

is this still occurring ? Do you use hibernate at all ?
