Description David Lehman 2011-10-18 16:50:36 UTC
Description of problem:
Any system that has users who might have data should have separate storage for user data and system data. That usually means a separate /home filesystem.

This is of particular importance when the time comes to reinstall the OS. System data can be safely destroyed and those devices reformatted without touching the user data, but only if this separation was put in place in advance.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 15 Installation Guide contains a recommended partitioning scheme that does not include a separate /home filesystem. This should be fixed.

Additional info:
All other documentation that conveys recommendations and/or best practices should also include information about separation of user data from system data.

Thanks for this, David.

For the Fedora 16 guide, I've updated the Recommended Partitioning Scheme to list and explain a /home partition along with boot, swap, and root.

This information was previously provided in the first paragraph after this list and again in section 9.13.5.1.1, but I've removed it from each location and created a dedicated list item in section 9.13.5.1 instead.

The draft version is at http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora_Draft_Documentation/0.1/html/Installation_Guide/s2-diskpartrecommend-x86.html

Cheers,

Jack

Removing myself for these bug components as I'm either no longer involved in that aspect of the project, or no longer care to watch this particular bug. Sorry if you are caught in a maelstrom of bug changes as a result!
