Same problem here with two different distributions (Gentoo and Arch). Definitely a bug introduced upstream with 3.2.1. From the backtrace: folks:ERROR:individual.c:4841:__lambda8_: assertion failed: (name != NULL) The crash is in folks. Assigning the empty string to "name" before the assert fixes the bug (that's just a hack, not a real fix, of course). Each time I get connected to Internet: Folks crashes -> Empathy crashes -> Gnome-Shell crashes :/. Created attachment 530478 [details]
Quick and dirty patch for Folks
Package: empathy-3.2.1.1-2.fc16 Architecture: x86_64 OS Release: Fedora release 16 (Verne) Comment ----- On my system, it also takes down Gnome Shell on login (it crashes twice which results in black screen). folks-0.6.5-2.fc16.i686 empathy-3.2.2-1.fc16.i686 gnome-shell-3.2.1-2.fc16.i686 Related bug 760542 After some tests, this bug happens on different distributions when I am client of an ejabberd server with some VCard or LDAP modules enabled. I only have Prosody server, Google account and link-local messaging. Anyway, I already solved this on my computer with the following resolution (from bug 760542): I tried to rebuild folks-0.6.6-1.fc17.src.rpm on fedora 16 and it seems it solves the problem. You can get the SRPM here: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=278867 (In reply to comment #12) > Anyway, I already solved this on my computer with the following resolution > (from bug 760542): > > I tried to rebuild folks-0.6.6-1.fc17.src.rpm on fedora 16 and it seems it > solves the problem. You can get the SRPM here: > > http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=278867 i can confirm this *** Bug 760549 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 766213 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** With confirmation from Daniel, I don't see any reason not to issue an update. I've been using the package for a long time as I could not run Gnome Shell and Empathy with Jabber at all. *** Bug 760542 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** folks-0.6.6-1.fc16 has been submitted as an update for Fedora 16. https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/folks-0.6.6-1.fc16 *** Bug 758800 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** *** Bug 758811 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Package folks-0.6.6-1.fc16: * should fix your issue, * was pushed to the Fedora 16 testing repository, * should be available at your local mirror within two days. Update it with: # su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing folks-0.6.6-1.fc16' as soon as you are able to. Backtrace analysis of bugs across components suggests the actual bug might be in component glib2 or folks instead of component empathy. You might want to inspect the backtraces from the bugs listed below to find out the correct component. Bugs which were found to be similar to this bug: empathy: bug #758800 folks: bug #753619 gnome-shell: bug #747904, bug #758799 This comment is automatically generated. *** Bug 747904 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** Switching component to folks, even though it is rather late :). I installed this update (folks-0.6.6-1.fc16.x86_64), but it has NOT fixed the problem, which is described in Bug 747904. After I enter my password at the initial login, the screen turns white and no longer accepts input while a large file is written to /var/spool/abrt (Reason: Process /usr/bin/gnome-shell was killed by signal 6 (SIGABRT)). $ uname -r 3.2.10-3.fc16.x86_64 $ rpm -q folks gnome-shell folks-0.6.6-1.fc16.x86_64 gnome-shell-3.2.2.1-1.fc16.x86_64 That's a bad news. Maybe reopen? Or if you're not sure, file a new bugreport? This sort of folks bugs apparently only affect some users depending on protocols used and even servers they connect to. Maybe the best solution would be to file a new bug report with detailed descriptions of things you connect to with telepathy. (In reply to comment #26) > That's a bad news. Maybe reopen? Maybe the best solution would > be to file a new bug report with detailed descriptions of things you connect to > with telepathy. The owner of Bug 747904 marked it as a duplicate of this report. It appears that it is not a duplicate. What can be done to re-open Bug 747904? This report (Bug 747908) is about a problem with /usr/bin/empathy, while Bug 747904 is a problem with /usr/bin/gnome-shell. Is is possible that it was marked as a duplicate by mistake? It is possible. I believe you can just reopen the "duplicate" and it becomes a separate report again. But, all recent gnome-shell and empathy crashes were because of libfolks that both of them use. And usually because the same bug in libfolks. That is why they get marked duplicate. folks-0.6.6-1.fc16 has been pushed to the Fedora 16 stable repository. If problems still persist, please make note of it in this bug report. |
