Description of problem:

The system is an AMD quad core with an ATI 6700 chipset, and has 2 displays.

Following an update in the middle of last week, on every reboot/login, one
of the screens displays the Oh no! .../logout button.  It follows whichever
screen has the sprite and appears about 15 seconds before the other screen
that starts showing the desktop normally.  Both always occur.

gdm-3.2.1.1-1.fc16.x86_64

How reproducible:
100%

What I could possibly do is just kill process on the one screen 
(with the logout button), but have no idea which process it is.

Does the black screen appear before or after you log in ?

It appears only after login.

I do have to admit there are multiple things that happen when logged
in, 10 desktops, and probably 12 terminal instances from
gnome-terminal, xchat, evolution, rhythmbox, etc.

The only thing visible after the login for many seconds is the
background, guess I need to time it to see how long it lasts.

Sweet.  The issue is gone in gdm-3.2.1
