Sounds like xfwm4 died or was killed and then you logged out, saving the session without it. ;( Anything in ~/.xsession-errors from the failed session? Can you start xfwm4 from a terminal and save the session and it goes back to normal? (failing that you can rm the session file in ~/.cache/sessions/ and it should go back to a default version that has xfwm4 in it). Nope. Just logged out normally, with save session checked. Then logged back in. All the windows came up, but no window manager. And, yes if I rm sessions/xfce4* , it works. I don't see any ~/.xsession-errors: ls -a . .dbus install.log .pulse .. Desktop install.log.syslog .pulse-cookie .abrt Documents .kde rpmbuild .adobe Downloads .lesshst .serverauth.1805 anaconda-ks.cfg .esd_auth .libreoffice .smolt .bash_history .gconf .local .ssh .bash_logout .gnome2 lxde-error .tcshrc .bash_profile .gnome2_private .macromedia Templates .bashrc .gnupg .mission-control .thumbnails .cache .gstreamer-0.10 .mozilla .thunderbird .ccache .gtk-bookmarks Music Videos .config .gvfs Pictures .Xauthority .cshrc .ICEauthority .pki .Xclients .imsettings.log Public .Xclients-default What display manager are you using? gdm? or are you using startx or the like? In any case the useful .xsession-errors would have been the one from the session where xfwm4 died, which is long gone. ;( Hey Kevin, I'm experiencing this on both F15 and on just updated F16 too. I'm using gdm and I can reproduce this even on a new account I create in the system (useradd). I'm attaching .xsession-errors from my home directory in hope there's something useful Created attachment 535697 [details]

Can you provide a: ls -lRZ ~newuser/.config and rpm -q xfwm4 I'm not able to trigger the condition right now (must be Murphy's Law ...), I guess it's some kind of race. I noticed that this happens when I'm saving a session with many windows open which are often slow to respond (Firefox with many tabs, LibreOffice). xfwm4-4.8.2-1.fc16.x86_64 (latest & greatest in updates-testing as of right now) I have SELinux disabled, hope it's relevant even without reproducing the window-manager-gone issue: kovinek:/home/newuser (0) # ls -lR .config/ .config/: total 32 drwxrwxr-x 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:12 autostart drwx------ 3 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:17 chromium drwxr-xr-x 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 nautilus drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 Thunar drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 tracker -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 632 Nov 24 14:11 user-dirs.dirs -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 5 Nov 24 14:11 user-dirs.locale drwxr-xr-x 6 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 xfce4 .config/autostart: total 8 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 30 Nov 24 14:12 xfce4-settings-helper-autostart.desktop -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 28 Nov 24 14:11 xfconf-migration-4.6.desktop .config/chromium: total 20 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 4 Nov 24 14:17 chrome_shutdown_ms.txt drwx------ 3 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:17 Default -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 0 Nov 24 14:16 First Run -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 10973 Nov 24 14:17 Local State .config/chromium/Default: total 520 -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 53248 Nov 24 14:16 Archived History -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 727 Nov 24 14:16 Bookmarks -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 727 Nov 24 14:17 Bookmarks.bak -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 9216 Nov 24 14:16 Cookies -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 521 Nov 24 14:17 Current Session -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 366 Nov 24 14:17 Current Tabs -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 20480 Nov 24 14:16 Favicons -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 86016 Nov 24 14:16 History -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 73728 Nov 24 14:16 History Index 2011-11 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 612 Nov 24 14:17 History Provider Cache -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 11374 Nov 24 14:16 Last Session -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 8 Nov 24 14:16 Last Tabs -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 12288 Nov 24 14:16 Login Data -rw------- 1 newuser newuser 2787 Nov 24 14:17 Preferences -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 28672 Nov 24 14:17 Top Sites drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:16 User StyleSheets -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 131072 Nov 24 14:16 Visited Links -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 67584 Nov 24 14:17 Web Data .config/chromium/Default/User StyleSheets: total 0 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 0 Nov 24 14:16 Custom.css .config/nautilus: total 0 .config/Thunar: total 0 .config/tracker: total 0 .config/xfce4: total 16 drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:17 desktop drwxrwxr-x 5 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 panel drwxr-xr-x 3 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 xfconf drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 xfwm4 .config/xfce4/desktop: total 4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 133 Nov 24 14:17 icons.screen0.rc .config/xfce4/panel: total 12 drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 launcher-10 drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 launcher-11 drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:11 launcher-9 .config/xfce4/panel/launcher-10: total 4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 384 Nov 24 14:11 13221402962.desktop .config/xfce4/panel/launcher-11: total 4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 366 Nov 24 14:11 13221402963.desktop .config/xfce4/panel/launcher-9: total 4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 newuser newuser 332 Nov 24 14:11 13221402961.desktop .config/xfce4/xfconf: total 4 drwx------ 2 newuser newuser 4096 Nov 24 14:17 xfce-perchannel-xml .config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml: total 40 -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 204 Nov 24 14:12 keyboards.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 10545 Nov 24 14:11 xfce4-keyboard-shortcuts.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 227 Nov 24 14:11 xfce4-mixer.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 3466 Nov 24 14:17 xfce4-panel.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 1187 Nov 24 14:12 xfce4-session.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 5603 Nov 24 14:11 xfwm4.xml -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser newuser 2154 Nov 24 14:11 xsettings.xml .config/xfce4/xfwm4: total 0 Interesting. yeah, perhaps it's a race with applications that take too long to save themselves? Will dig around some more... This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '16'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping Still happends from time to time on F17.
