How reproducible:
I only tried the upgrade once, but the crash appears with every boot.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade from Fedora 15 to Fedora 16 using preupgrade.
2. Boot into new system.

Actual results:
The screen with the submarine briefly appears and then disappears, replaced by an unhappy monitor and an uninformative message like "something has gone wrong and the system cannot recover".

Expected results:
Booting to login page where one may choose which desktop environment to use.


Additional info:
When Fedora 15 was released I did not like the switch from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3. I tried various extensions and so forth to get the Gnome Shell to behave like I would expect a desktop to, but I finally switched to KDE. When I upgraded to Fedora 16, some of the extensions might have caused the problem. I uninstalled the gnome-tweak-tool, but it didn't help. I finally figured out I could bypass gdm and log into kde by booting into recovery mode and entering "kdm". So I have a usable system, but gdm doesn't work.

I have the same problem, but never switched to KDE...  I can login in console mode
and do startx, but then, gnome-shell pretend that my graphic card has not sufficient capabilities, and switches to fallback mode.
All worked fine in Fedora 15...

If you are using the nvidia drivers this is a known problem between nvidia
and glibc. I switched to nouveau driver and it works.

My system uses an Intel graphics card.

In my case, this is a duplicate of 753387.  Caribou was installed in i686 version while my system is x86_64.  I removed the Caribou package and reinstalled it in x86_64 version : gdm and gnome-shell work fine now.

Yes, this worked for me (reinstalling caribou as x86_64).
