Description Nadav Har'El 2011-11-13 10:27:14 UTC
Back in May, I reported to the upstream bug tracker a bug in xwininfo: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37710

Basically, "xwininfo -name ZZZ" (for a random string "ZZZ") always incorrectly returns a window with an empty name (in my case, usually a Firefox window), even though it definitely doesn't have the name ZZZ.

I submitted a patch, and it (or some variant of it) was applied in June (see announcement http://www.mail-archive.com/xorg-announce@lists.freedesktop.org/msg01480.html)

I was eager to have the fix appear in Fedora 16, but it didn't.

Are xorg-x11-utils in Fedora ever updated? I see the RPM is versioned "7.5", a release which is two years old... If you're only selectively backporting specific bug fixes, can you please backport this one? Should be trivial to apply this fix.

Thanks.

I was very sad to discover that in Fedora 17, xorg-x11-utils is still at version 7.5, and still has this annoying bug.

Basically, for Fedora users, "xwininfo" hasn't worked for more than a year - and I'm really surprised I'm the only one complaining. Is no-one using this basic X Window tool any more? Sic transit gloria mundi :-)

But more generally, I'm curious - X11 R7.5 is almost three years old. X11 R7.6 already came out in December 2010 - a year and a half ago. Why isn't Fedora using it?

This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

The bug still exists in Fedora 18, though it was fixed a year and a half ago upstream. Why is Fedora still carrying the antique xorg-x11-utils 7.5? It's 4 years old for crying out loud :-) If for some reason x.org 7.5 is kept, perhaps at least backport this easy bugfix?

I just verified that this bug no longer exists in Fedora 19's xorg-x11-utils-7.5-9.fc19. So closing it.
