HP compaq nx7010 laptop computer with:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 01)
02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 20)

The computer will freeze when both are in use.  The computer must be power cycled to recover.

System is currently running Fedora 16.  Prior to that, the system was running Fedora 15 and this problem was NOT present.


Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot system with ethernet cable plugged in.
2. Log into graphical desktop.
3. Within about 30 seconds, system will lock hard.

can you try the kernel-debug build and see if you get a backtrace ?
(make sure to try the 3.1.1 update too)

I have attached the /var/log/messages entries for the kernel-debug-3.1.1 session.  I booted the laptop and, once it was completely *up*, I plugged in the ethernet cable, which activated eth0.  Then I logged into the desktop and started Firefox.  A few seconds later, the system locked up hard (no keyboard LEDs, no response to 'ping').

Tom, are you still seeing this with the 3.2.7 or newer kernel?

I no longer see this problem with the 3.2.7 kernel.

Do you know what fixed it?

Honestly, no.  There are a large number of changes in the kernel between major version releases and we often see issues get cleared up when we rebase.  It's one of the major reasons we do that.
