Installation with an external monitor attached caused the creation of an inappropriate xorg.conf. Removal of the offending file solved the problem. |
Description of problem: Thinkpad X61s was running Fedora 15 with no problems. After a fresh install of Fedora 16 and upon the first boot, the Gnome environment went into 'fallback' mode, i.e. Gnome 2. I could not use my external VGA port because there is no option in the 'Display' section to use a second device and the first one is not even properly identified. I realized that the system was using the VESA driver, despite the presence of the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. lspci shows: --- BEGIN --- 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (primary) (rev 0c) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (secondary) (rev 0c) --- END --- If I remove 'nomodeset' from the Grub boot parameters, it starts the graphical boot, but GDM does not load! I can used Ctrl-Alt-F{1,2,3,etc.} to switch virtual terminals however. As to /etc/X11/xorg.conf: --- BEGIN --- Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "vesa" EndSection --- END --- If I change 'vesa' for 'intel', GDM still refuses to load. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora 16 How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Perform a fresh install of Fedora 16 on the Thinkpad X61s OR 1. Remove 'nomodeset' from the Grub boot paramaters 2. Allow to boot. Actual results: First login: GDM starts. After the login, the Gnome Shell refuses to load, instead entering 'fallback mode'. Display properties in the system configuration do not detect the current display property and moreover will not allow one to select an external monitor. Expected results: GDM should start properly with the Intel drive, Gnome 3/Gnome Shell should load and the display properties should function correctly. The Thinkpad X61s is a relatively recent machine with the Intel GM965/GL960 controller. Fedora 15 worked flawlessly with this machine. Additional info: Upon request.
