Description Michał Zegan 2011-11-25 13:33:29 UTC
Hello.
I am a blind computer user.
I can use it if I have a screenreader.
I heart fedora has orca included in by default as the part of the gnome desktop.
The main problem is that the fedora distribution cannot be installed without sighted assistance.
It would be very useful, even critical for us, to be able to install fedora without any help of a sighted person nearby.

General ideas:
Neither a livecd has any option to start any form of a screenreader at boot, or the anaconda installer has the ability to do it.
Because most people are not blind and do not need a screen reader, I think that the best option would be to be able to select, at the boot menu, if we want to boot a screenreader-enabled installer/livecd or a normal one.
We cannot see the boot menu, but we can be told once to press arrows few times and then enter.
Those boot options should add some special command line parameters that anaconda or livecd could detect and then enable a screenreader when booted.
It would also be useful to have a pc-speaker beep at the arrival of the boot prompt, that will make it clear that I can press those arrows.
A hotkey for the screenreader boot option could also be added to simplify things.

Other details that are specific to other components will be written in other related bugs.

This would be a fantastic step in the right direction. I like the idea of a boot option, so long as the instructions are good and clear about how many key presses of which keys. This is not ideal but is something that should be achievable early on.

You should be able to test it without owning a screen reader (assuming you do not care about testing Braille) as long as you have speakers, as the text should be read out to you when highlighted/selected as part of navigation.

Yeah, a screenreader doesn't require any hardware. Unless speakup should also be added, but it currently also doesn't.
