Description of problem:  Had NetworkManager disabled, and network service running with a static IP address.  Has worked for months and still works in Fedora 14 and a version of F15 about a month old (since last updates).  Shutdown and rebooted on Dec 6, 2011.  Networking came up.  Shutdown and rebooted oa Dec 9, 2011, no network.  When I examine its status via systemctl, it shows "loaded active exited".  ifconfig eth0 shows ethernet up and running properly.  I run named with bind-chroot, and systemctl shows it is "loaded active running".


Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Not sure, can't find a package named network.  The closest I've come is net-tools-1.60-117.fc15.src.rpm

How reproducible:
Every time I booted, and no matter how I tweaked.


Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create static IP via network service (ifcfg-eth0) in F15
2. Update to latest packages, including those from updates testing
3. Reboot
  
Actual results:
No network

Expected results:
Network available

Here is the ifcfg-eth0 that worked until yesterday.

As a workaround, I disabled network service, enabled NetworkManager, and set up NetworkManager as the same static IP, and set ifcfg-eth0 to NetworkManager controlled.  Seems fine so far.

Thanks, this was the piece I was missing, a file that belonged to the package, a string to pull.

When I try to ping or get email or browse to a website, it fails.  I say that ethernet is up because ifconfig eth0 shows the IP address has been assigned, and there are no errors in /var/log/messages or on the output of starting network service.

I'll have to break networking again, capture the output, then fix it again in order to post, so it will take a while.  I'll try to get to it in the next day, actually in the next few hours.  Here is the current output with NetworkManager workaround in place.

I can't seem to break the system again.  Somehow, invoking NetworkManager seems to have fixed whatever was wrong.  I disabled NetworkManager, enabled network, and changed the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 back to the original (NM-controlled=no), and rebooted.  Networking works now like it always did.

I keep a git repository in /etc, so I went back and looked at the diff between the commits where it stopped working, I invoked NetworkManager, and the next update commit.  Unfortunately, I didn't do a commit only before and after the NetworkManager enable and the network disable.  I see lots of changes related to networking, and disabling NetworkManager probably didn't revert those changes.  I'm reluctant to revert to the failed /etc state since there are many other changes that apply to the current software installed (I installed a bunch of Gnome extensions yesterday).  I'm not knowledgeable enough to know which changes are relevant and which are not.  Is there a particular file or files you would like to see the changes for?

Here is the output of the above commands with network enabled and NetworkManager disabled.

It happened again.  I had turned the computer off, and on restart everything looked OK, but there was no network access.  I ran the above commands when it wasn't working, and here is their output.

Restarting network and named service was no help, I couldn't even get to the gateway (my router).  
Rather than go the NetworkManager workaround this time, I looked through the network configuration, and changed some things that I didn't like.

In ifcfg-eth0, I changed protocol from none to static,
and in the /etc/sysconfig/Network/ I removed two extraneous profiles left from an initial attempt to configure NetworkManager last time.  I then did a soft reboot (shutdown -r) and on the reboot, everything started working.

I'm now running the 41.6-1 kernel, though I do a custom compile of the src.rpm so it is tuned to my system.
