It happened while I was using Google chrome.
It may have been just a coincidence though.

The problem occured the same second I disconnected my AC-adapter.
Just a second after the "Oops, something has gone wrong" shows up and I'm forced to log off.
I've been running my computer with the Ac-adapter connected for days without a problem.

just a 'me too'. Moved between rooms and on battery for a while, and gnome-shell repeatedly crashing, and could not log in even after reboot, until I plug the AC -power back in:

Hardware is Toshiba A210, laptop, gnome-settings-daemon-3.2.2-1.fc16.x86_64 .

Beside the ubuntu bug, there is another at the archlinux forum:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127461

My brightness is also at -5 with AC, like in the ubuntu bug comment:

cat /sys/class/backlight/toshiba/brightness
-5

Here's a little trick: If you're using gnome-shell and it crashes due to the gnome-settings-daemnon crash, just hit alt+f4 and the black crash message will be closed and you'll return to your desktop with no need to reboot or log of.

Works for me everytime.

Hmm, that little trick should probably be written on the crash page (i.e. try this first, and logout/re-login. reboot if it does not).

BTW, I have been using a patched version of gnome-settings-demon, using the small patch at the bottom of Ubuntu report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/918421

That seems to fix it.

Oh, the ubuntu report mentions this one, I didn't realise the relationship is not recipical.

Having the same problem: Whenever I run my x86_64 on battery, gnome-settings-daemon crashes immediately or after a minute at the latest.

No problems when plugged in.

Found this:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127461

So I moved /usr/lib64/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/libpower.so to a different place and now I'm able to run my laptop on battery without having gnome-settings-daemon crashing all the time.

Of course, this is a workaround and no solution at all.

I haven't had a crash since I applied the patch in the middle of this ubuntu report. (I mentioned this in comment 16):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-daemon/+bug/918421

Anybody else wants to corroborate this?

BTW, is anybody suffering from this problem *not* with a Toshiba laptop? It seems to be a Toshiba-LCD-related, at least all the reports which mentions hardware.

I just had a crash, because normal regular yum upgrade over-written my patched gnome-settings-daemon (against 3.2.2-1) with gnome-settings-daemon-3.2.2-2 . Apparently I installed gnome-settings-daemon-3.2.2-2 three days ago. I have not had a crash for over 7 weeks, then have one after having my patched version over-written.

FWIW, this did work. But I would rather it did not crash (like with my patched version for 7 weeks).

alt+f4 just works like a charm (I'm running Fedora 16 64)! Thank you for this precious trick. That's why Linux users are different. Cheers.

Can somebody push that patch upstream?! I just had a crash after not having it for over a whole month. I looked andit was because the regular yum upgrade overwritten my patched gnome-setting-daemon a few days ago. sigh.

I have tried the usual (disconnecting mains and run on battery for a while) and no longer have the same problem with fedora 17/gnome 3.4 . Probably this just needs an upgrade...

Comment 46 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 12:08:26 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 47 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 12:12:45 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
