Description of problem:

Starting the sound settings from the gnome-shell icon takes down the whole session here. I get the "Oh, no - something bad happened" dialog.

I tried the prefs windows in a few apps (empathy at least) and that shows a prefs window filled with content from other apps shown in the background.
