Description Kevin R. Page 2011-12-19 21:41:35 UTC
On first boot an log in to the account, when switching to the activities view the Workspaces switcher cannot be seen nor reached.

The "Type to Search..." box is also truncated maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the way from it's right hand side -- so it appears the remainder of the search and the workspaces are being places off the right-hand side of the screen.

The top bar and user applet are correctly places. The mouse pointer can not be moved further than the edge of the screen, i.e. the desktop overall seems to be the correct size and position, the missing elements seem to be being plotted in non-existent space.

Alt-F2 and "r" fixes the issue, including on subsequent logins until reboot AFAICT.

Just to confirm this bug is still present with all current F16 updates applied.

It only occurs straight after a new boot -- after logging out and in again or using "r". This is a desktop PC with monitor.

It's also been upgraded several times from previous versions of Fedora -- I wonder if there's some old screen configuration somewhere I could/should find an delete?

I'm attaching a screenshot which shows the correct cornering of the top bar (which shows it's the right width) but the incorrect positioning of the truncated search box and workspace switcher (which is only even partially usable once popped out).

I've seen no other reports of anything like this for Fedora 16, so it's something fairly specific to your machine or your account - trying from a freshly created account would be one good test.

Can you provide information about your video card and graphics drivers?

Yes, it would seem it must be.

Is there any legacy config that could cause this and could be safely deleted? I'd rather not delete all gnome config, obviously.

Graphics card is an ATI Technologies Inc RV730 PRO [Radeon HD 4650]. Xorg logs:
[ 851.140] (II) LoadModule: "radeon"
[ 851.140] (II) Loading /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so
[ 851.140] (II) Module radeon: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[ 851.140] compiled for 1.11.4, module version = 6.14.99
[ 851.140] Module class: X.Org Video Driver

Another thing that might be worth noting in the context of corner cases/race conditions might be that the account in question is a LUKS encrypted home directory that's mounted through PAM -- at login there's a noticeable delay while the mount is activated.

With the main account on this machine the problem happens, straight after boot, somewhere around 25%-50% of the time.

Testing with a different user, but also with LUKS encrypted home, it happened on the 19th boot (1 in 19, but with a sample of 19 :) ). This is a less well used account that I guess may have less configuration/settings.

Testing with a completely clean, non-LUKS, account *doesn't* cause the fault at all (at least, after 78 reboots, which seems like a large enough sample).

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 16:29:24 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 20:16:05 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
