* Click on the down arrow to the right of the current status
* Scroll to the bottom of the pull-down
* Select "Edit Custom Messages..."

I can edit the text of existing custom messages here but cannot add any new ones. In older versions of Empathy, I used to be able to do that. I use this functionality frequently to post witty status updates to my coworkers.

Actually if you click the down arrow to the right of the current status it does allow you to type a new custom message if you select the "Custom Message ..." option.

However, the problem, in my opinion, is that these custom messages do not show up in the "Edit Custom Messages ..." dialog. In my case I did not have any custom messages from previous versions of Fedora or GNOME or Empathy and the dialog is completely empty, even though I set my status to "Hello world!"

I can confirm this issue. I usually don't change my status. Now I tried couple of them. But if I select "Edit Custom Messages.." I don't see them.

So, just typing in the new custom message and hitting ENTER is not enough for it to be saved and shown in the "Edit Custom Message..." dialog. One has to click the little heart symbol next to the entry widget to mark it as a favourite.

This is documented in the Empathy user help.
