glew 1.7.0 was released at in August 2011 and adds support to new OpenGL extensions and bug fixes: http://glew.sourceforge.net/log.html

The enhancements in the new release would seem to justify an update but the piglit OpenGL driver test suite in currently under package review in bug #773021 and it bundles a patched copy of glew 1.7.0:

I've built this for F18.  I'm looking into rebuilding for F17, I suspect there's a soname bump involved again, sigh.

It's not actually built for Rawhide/F18 - the needed changes are in git but the 1.7.0 tarball hasn't apparently been uploaded nor is there a build in koji.

With the tarball in place 1.7.0-3 builds fine, but yes, there is a soname bump involved.
