Comment 1 Dana Mison 2009-07-09 05:28:27 UTC
doc checked in: https://svn.devel.redhat.com/repos/jboss-soa/branches/4.3/build-tools/docs/esb/Getting_Started_Guide.pdf

Docs QE Process: https://docspace.corp.redhat.com/clearspace/docs/DOC-17207

There isn't much different in this doc that in CP01, I have moved a lot of the upgrading issues from this doc to the release notes & just referred to it from there.

Verification needed for component versions, supported JVMs etc.

Comment 2 Marek Baluch 2009-07-15 13:48:55 UTC
It's quite possible the section 1.6 is obsolete. Will report back when we know for sure if a new CP02 JON plugin is planned.

Comment 3 Marek Baluch 2009-07-16 15:49:55 UTC
Link: Added: This issue depends SOA-1416

Comment 4 Dana Mison 2009-07-23 01:14:09 UTC
Link: Added: This issue incorporates SOA-1151

Comment 5 Len DiMaggio 2009-07-23 13:03:00 UTC
As we recently learned there will be no CP02 plugin. Remove the section 1.6 please.

Comment 6 Dana Mison 2009-07-24 07:21:29 UTC
Section 1.6 will still be relevant because users may be upgrading from GA to CP02

I'll will update this section to address this.

Comment 7 Dana Mison 2009-07-24 08:05:37 UTC
Doc has been updated.

Section 1.6 has been updated
Also add Certified and Compatible Configurations (Section 1.1.2)

These have been highlighted as per usual

Comments:

---------------------------

Page 1, 1.1.1. Hardware Requirement Recommendations

Test:

The full installation of the SOA Platform server requires 690 megabytes of hard drive space. The
standalone ESB server only requires 210 megabytes of space.

Comment:

For 4.3 CP02 CR2, the embedded server and its docs use 798 MB, the standalone server 214 MB

---------------------------

Page 2, 1.1.2.1. Compatible Configurations, 1.1.2.2. Certified Configurations

We should remove all references to the BEA JDK

---------------------------

Page 3, 1.1.3. Configuring Your Java Environment

We should replace all references to Java 1.5 with references to Java 1.6 as Sun will EOL 1.5 in October.

---------------------------

Page 5, 1.3. Verifying the integrity of downloaded files

We should replace the reference to 4.3 CP01 in the checksum example with a reference to 4.3 CP02

Text:

If you are using JBoss Operations Network version 2.1 to manage or monitor your SOA Platform
server then you need to ensure that your JON server has the correct version of the ESB plugin.

The ESB plugin that was included with the JON Server is not compatible with the 4.3.CP01 or later
releases of JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform.

The updated plugin is available for download along with the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform products
at the Red Hat JBoss Customer Support Portal, https://support.redhat.com/jbossnetwork/. The new
ESB plugin for JON contains many fixes but is not compatible with the SOA Platform 4.3 GA release.

Comment - replace the text with:

A new ESB plugin is available for download along with the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform products
at the Red Hat JBoss Customer Support Portal, https://support.redhat.com/jbossnetwork/. This new
ESB plugin for is compatible with both JON version 2.1.2 and 2.3.

If you are using JON 2.1.2, you install the plugin by following the instructions listed below in section Procedure 1.7. Updating the ESB plugin for JON

If you are using JON 2.3, then the plugin is automatically installed when you install the JON server.

Text:

6. You should now see a "Hello World" message appear in your application server's console.

Comment - Add this note:

Note: Depending on whether you are using the standalone or embedded server, you may or may not see this text displayed on the console. If the text is not displayed on the console, check for this text in the server's log file (in server/<server profile name>/log/server.log).

Comment 9 Dana Mison 2009-09-02 09:44:33 UTC
To clarify:

"Page 3, 1.1.3. Configuring Your Java Environment
We should replace all references to Java 1.5 with references to Java 1.6 as Sun will EOL 1.5 in October. "

I assume we are will still be supporting 1.5 , just that installation instructions should refer to 1.6 where possible ?

Comment 10 Len DiMaggio 2009-09-02 12:45:45 UTC
Yes! 1.5 is still supported, but we should refer to 1.6 whenever we reference a JDK/JVM

Comment 11 Dana Mison 2009-09-03 10:22:46 UTC
For 4.3 CP02 CR2, the embedded server and its docs use 798 MB, the standalone server 214 MB
* updated to 708 and 217 respectively based on the CR2 downloads not including the docs. Removed the word "full" from the description.

We should remove all references to the BEA JDK
* Done

We should replace all references to Java 1.5 with references to Java 1.6 as Sun will EOL 1.5 in October.
*updated instructions to refer to the Sun 1.6 JDK for windows, and OpenJDK 1.6 for RHEL

We should replace the reference to 4.3 CP01 in the checksum example with a reference to 4.3 CP02
* I've removed the example to avoid expectations that it should be correct for the release in question. Rewritten text to accomodate.

* rewrote this section

6. You should now see a "Hello World" message appear in your application server's console.
Added additional details to this procedure to clarify

Comment 12 Len DiMaggio 2009-09-04 17:45:20 UTC
Sorry - let's be safe and round up the numbers - from:

For 4.3 CP02 CR2, the embedded server and its docs use 798 MB, the standalone server 214 MB

to:

For 4.3 CP02 CR2, the embedded server and its docs use 800 MB, the standalone server 200 MB

Comment 13 Len DiMaggio 2009-09-04 17:47:36 UTC
Reassigning back to Darrin for one last edit.

Comments related to JON:

1.6. The JBoss Operations Network ESB Plugin

Important
Whether you are installing the JBoss SOA Platform as a new server or upgrading an existing server you should perform the JON plugin updates steps while your SOA Platform server is halted.

AFAICT the SOA-P server does not have to be halted.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

3. Stop server and agents
Ensure that your SOA Platform server, your JON server and your JON agents are halted.

remove SOA Platform server ->

4. Extract the plugin file, rhq-jbossesb-soa-plugin-SOA.4.3.0.GA_CP01.jar , from the downloaded package

the plugin's name has changed ->

The plugin included in the 2.3 release of the JON Server is compatible with the 4.3.CP01 and 4.3.CP02 releases of the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform. You will not need to update it.

I have no idea if that is true. I have used the latest JON-2.3 snapshot for testing (8299) and the plugin had to be copied manually (quite easy, same procedure as with JON-2.1.2) - but there might be a JON-2.3 server ready for our CP02 release which will work out of the box with SOA-P.

Comment 15 Dana Mison 2009-09-09 06:13:52 UTC
1 - updated filename for the plugin

pinged soa-pm-list for clarification on the upgrade steps & status of the plugin in JON 2.3

Comment 16 Dana Mison 2009-09-18 04:02:30 UTC
updated info re SOA-1484

still waiting for final confirmation on final package names & CSP locations for the JON ESB plugins

Comment 18 Dana Mison 2009-09-21 02:14:13 UTC
updated file names of JON ESB plugin downloads as per SOA-1489

Comment 19 Len DiMaggio 2009-09-22 13:21:30 UTC
The docs indicate a final plugin file name of:

• For JON 2.1.2, download rhq-jbossesb-soa-plugin-SOA.4.3.0.GA_CP02.zip.
• For JON 2.3, download jon-plugin-pack-soa-2.3.0.GA.zip.

This is the name that will be used.
