Comment 2 Kevin Conner 2010-04-13 12:50:10 UTC
At present this is the expected behaviour of AbstractFileGateway.

Comment 3 David Le Sage 2010-05-17 00:44:51 UTC
Release Note reads:

https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/JBESB-3278

Currently, the AbstractFileGateway only processes ESB service response data of type
byte[]. It ignores data of type String. This is because this functionality has not yet
    been added.

To work around this limitation, add the String to the message as someString.getBytes() in
    an ESB action.
