Comment 4 Dave Jones 2012-02-17 19:40:17 UTC
we need to see the backtrace when it crashes.

you might try running the kernel-debug package too to see if that gives additional information.

Comment 5 Pedro Rodriguez 2012-03-02 06:55:55 UTC
The problem persists despite all updates Whatever other info you need, tell me where to get it, and I'll post it!
ok, I loaded the debug kernel, unplugged the dsl cable and below is the output of dmesg on reboot.

Sorry, I had trouble logging in yesterday.

I must inform you that there is no change. Unplugging the dsl cable causes a crash. A slight improvement is, that I do not need to start Windows and then reboot. Fedora can now reboot after a forced shutdown.

I started Windows this morning, then unplugged the dsl cable. There was no crash. So my logic tells me this is not a hardware problem.

# Mass update to all open bugs.

Kernel 3.6.2-1.fc16 has just been pushed to updates.
This update is a significant rebase from the previous version.

Please retest with this kernel, and let us know if your problem has been fixed.

In the event that you have upgraded to a newer release and the bug you reported
is still present, please change the version field to the newest release you have
encountered the issue with. Before doing so, please ensure you are testing the
latest kernel update in that release and attach any new and relevant information
you may have gathered.

If you are not the original bug reporter and you still experience this bug,
please file a new report, as it is possible that you may be seeing a
different problem.
(Please don't clone this bug, a fresh bug referencing this bug in the comment is sufficient).

I installed F17 quite a while ago. The problem persisted. But about 3 Kernel updates ago, it stopped. The oldest kernel I have now for Fedora is 3.5.4.1. I can safely unplug the dsl cable now, the system does not crash. Well done out there!

I also have Ubuntu installed. It has kernel 3.2.0-32-generic-pae. It too crashes any time I unplug the dsl cable, and only starting Windows, then rebooting can get it working again. The people at Ubuntu are much slower at kernel updates than Fedora.

Will I ever know what caused the problem?

Maybe this is what fixed it:
