This looks like a problem in sap to me. It should pass strings that are properly converted to UTF-8. I agree. I filed this in upstream's bugtracker ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/sap+/+bug/953395 ), but since upstream is not really actively working on this anymore, I wouldn't get my hopes up about getting this fixed just yet.
