Description Banana Fool 2012-01-28 08:05:03 UTC
Kernel 3.2.2 hangs on boot. They don't produce any error messages, even with initcall_debug and debug. I have ASRock H61iCafe.

acpi=off lets it boot, but then it doesn't detect monitor resolution and 3D acceleration doesn't work (I use nouveau).

rdblacklist=nouveau without acpi=off seems to let it to proceed a little further, but it still hangs in the end.

Comment 1 Josh Boyer 2012-01-28 13:14:44 UTC
Please install kernel-debug and see if further output is seen. There was another user that had problems with hangs and it was assigned to nouveau to start with.

3.3 kernel is worse - it shuts down the display.

Comment 6 Dave Jones 2012-07-16 18:39:03 UTC
I've seen this happen too a while ago. It never got fixed.

If you just leave it, eventually it finishes loading. (On my Vaio it took about 15 minutes, it may take longer/shorter depending on your specific hardware).

Comment 7 Patrick Higgins 2012-11-30 22:17:42 UTC
My dmesg shows a 1500 second delay at boot that I just left sitting to see if anything would ever happen:

[ 1.072689] ACPI: Power Button [PWRF]
[ 1.072963] ACPI: processor limited to max C-state 1
[ 1500.748846] GHES: HEST is not enabled!

$ cat /proc/cmdline

$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.6.7-4.fc17.i686.PAE (mockbuild@) (gcc version 4.7.2 20120921 (Red Hat 4.7.2-2) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Tue Nov 20 20:07:38 UTC 2012

I was blacklisting nouveau and that's when I first experienced a long boot hang. I did not wait (I hit the reset button after a minute or two) so I don't know if the behavior would have been different.

I will try using kernel-debug to see if anything else is logged.

Comment 8 Patrick Higgins 2012-11-30 22:32:22 UTC
I was unable to reproduce the problem with kernel-debug. I can easily reproduce with 3.6.7-4.fc17.i686.PAE, however. I found that adding acpi=off eliminates the delay.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 12:30:05 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 12:48:04 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
