gatein-sample-extension.ear and gatein-sample-portal.ear are good starting points for portal customization using the extension mechanism as well as for showing how to define a custom portal. To make it easier to get started with these samples, they should be shipped in exploded format. This applies to the included sample*.war archives, too.

the main ear files are exploded, but its content is not.

Update:
gatein-sample-portal.ear and included .war archives are exploded, but .war archive at gatein-sample-extension.ear is not.
Setting this to 5.2.x

Can be fixed by adding <unpackTypes>was</unpackTypes> at maven-ear-plugin definition at EPP_5_2_Branch/examples/extension/ear/pom.xml
