vala-mode.el included in the current vala package is dated as:

;; Modified:   May 2008

while the latest version on the Web is:

;; Modified:   April 2011

It would be nice to have the new version in Fedora, since it contains support for preprocessor macros and some new keywords.

Package vala-0.16.0-2.fc17:
* should fix your issue,
* was pushed to the Fedora 17 testing repository,
* should be available at your local mirror within two days.
Update it with:
# su -c 'yum update --enablerepo=updates-testing vala-0.16.0-2.fc17'
as soon as you are able to.
