Description Paul Price 2012-03-05 14:27:21 UTC
Description of problem:
Install hangs at gray screen with flashing cursor just after ISOLinux 4.02 prompt.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Version 16

How reproducible:
Unable to proceed with Fedora installation 100% of the time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. ASUS motherboard P8Z68-M Pro
2. Fedora 16 DVD burnt from ISO
3. Stripped down to DVD and monitor only to troubleshoot using mediacheck

Actual results:
Gray screen with flashing cursor on top left after ISOLinux 4.02.. prompt.
Num Lock flashes off, DVD access stops, machine hangs.
Must power the machine off to reboot.

Expected results:
SOLUTION: Disable the ASM1061 controller in BIOS and Linux installation proceeds normally.

Additional info:
-tried options: text, lowres, nofb, noprobe, nodma, allowcddma, nopcmcia,
nofirewire, expert, nousb, pci=noacpi, acpi=off, xdriver=vesa
-tried booting from a CD from a boot.iso image
-this affects mediacheck, which hangs at the same place although on a black screen instead of gray

Support for this device was not added until the 3.2 kernel series. Unfortunately that means it did not make the Fedora 16 install media. Fedora 17 (currently in alpha) should work for you.
