Most commands error like this when not registered:

[root@bkearney src]# ./subscription-manager subscribe --auto
This system is not yet registered. Try 'subscription-manager register --help' for more information.


service-level is different:

[root@bkearney src]# ./subscription-manager service-level
Error: This system is currently not registered.

This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for inclusion
in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux release.  Product Management has
requested further review of this request by Red Hat Engineering, for
potential inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux release for currently
deployed products.  This request is not yet committed for inclusion in
a release.

fixed in master in 46c8d80d73931fdd0a33153b6a6384047f0254b7. Should be available in 1.0.1.
