when waking from suspension coloured vertical lines across entire screen

consistently

Steps to Reproduce:
1.have laptop suspend when lid is closed
2.close lid
3.open lid
  
Actual results:
vertical coloured lines

Expected results:
waking from sleep

You didn't specify which kernel hit this issue.  Does it happen with 2.6.43/3.3?

kernel version 3.1.0
also had proprietary ATI graphics drivers installed
