Booting fails with from grub2's direct ISO boot capabilities, or from a USB stick

Same problem with Fedora 18 Beta:

ISOFS: Unable to identify CD-ROM format
cramfs: wrong magic
SQUASHFS error: Can't find a SQUASHFS superblock on dm-0

Summary:

With the F18 Beta netboot ISO dd'ed to a USB key boot, I get the pretty grub bootloader, but then anaconda crashes.

This seems like a very basic "we think we are running from a CD/DVD, but we aren't, so we give up" error.

Likely to be some kind of hardware problem.
