Description Arnold Wang 2012-06-02 06:51:56 UTC
Description of problem:
I just installed F17 on my Dell Latitude E6410 laptop in UEFI mode. The installation went OK, it created a 200 MB EFI system partition mounted as /boot/efi. When I rebooted after the installation completed, it went into GRUB prompt instead of booting F17.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
F17
GRUB 0.97-93.fc17

How reproducible:
Install F17 in EFI mode.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results:
The system won't boot.

Expected results:
The system boot into F17.

The component you specified is wrong since you use GRUB 0.97 and not GRUB2

Comment 2 Mads Kiilerich 2012-06-02 12:55:48 UTC
Fixed component.

Comment 3 Arnold Wang 2012-06-02 16:51:39 UTC
Thanks for the quick response.
I went through the installation process again and there is no option for me to choose GRUB or GRUB2. I tried to customize the packages and all I can select are those optional packages, I can't modify those "core" packages.
I'm not sure what I can do at this point other than go back to the BIOS mode. Any suggestion?
Thanks again for all the helps.

anaconda.log and program.log might tell what went wrong - you could try to attach them here.

Comment 6 Brian Lane 2012-06-04 15:46:10 UTC
Please attach logs as individual text/plain files (everything in /tmp/*log), this make is easier to view them and search them.

without knowing grub legacy and what to look for I notice the following which seems suspicious to me:

Comment 15 James Harrion 2012-07-15 22:33:37 UTC
I have a Dell Lattitude E6410. 8Gb RAM

I've just upgraded from FEDORA 15 to Fedora 17.

I used preupgrade. The upgrade worked OK. Booting the machine after the upgrade was not successful.

I then tried a fresh install DVD and I could boot the machine after the install completed..
After a "yum upgrade" I could not boot the machime with the updated kernel

The two kernels are different:
3.3.4-5.fc17.x86_64 (Installed after the fresh install)
3.4.4-5.fc17.x86_64 (Installed after yum update)

So my question is: if one allows the machine to boot and the other does not.... Whats the difference between the two?

Not sure if I am using efi... Just took the defaults.

This model seems to have some serious issues - e.g. bug 810888.

Comment 18 Fedora End Of Life 2013-07-04 02:37:42 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 17 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 17. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '17'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 17 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the
'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 17's end of life.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 19 Fedora End Of Life 2013-08-01 08:54:47 UTC
Fedora 17 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-07-30. Fedora 17 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
