Description Mikael Carneholm 2003-03-08 00:54:05 UTC
Description of Problem:
(At least the) window list applet does not show text (names of open
applications) when in a vertical panel. The clock becomes unreadable as well,
although parts of the text is visible.

Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Start with a horisontal panel having a window list applet. Open an
application (say, gedit). Notice that the applet shows both icon and text for
gedit. Also notice that the clock is fully readable.
2. Move the panel to the right (or left) side of the screen by left-clicking and
dragging it there.

Actual Results:
The applet shows the icon only, and the clock becomes unreadable.

Expected Results:
The applet should show both text and icon, and the clock should be readable.

How often does this happen?
At least when panel size is set to x-small (please test with other panel sizes
as well)

Additional Information:
My suggestion is that text in applets should be drawn:

1. 90 degrees clockwise in a vertical panel, as this is how we are used to read
text on the back of books in a bookshelf.

OR

2. Horisontal, if the panel is redesigned to automatically resize itself to fit
the longest string of all the text-containing applets in the panel (no mockup of
this yet).

See attached mockups for consideration.

(future-transparent.png also shows how a solution to bug 107759 could look
like. Please don't mind the blurry font in the clock and window list applet,
this is gimp's aa-ing and would probably look much better with Xft's aa-ing)

Moved to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107853

All panel/applet UI changes need to be tracked/discussed on bugzilla.gnome.org
(with the exception of our default preferences settings, Bluecurve theme, and
anything written by Red Hat such as the RHN icon).
