started a wmv movie wunder mplayer. X uses the proprietary nvidia geforce driver.

Package: xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.12.3-2.fc17

Is anyone actually addressing this? The X server continues to crash when with the

mi [eq] overflow and a backtrace when using the opengl functions of the nvidia driver.

I've confirmed this using both mplayer with -vo gl and with gl/glut programs I've written in c and python.

This is the "way too common" backtrace.

and the backtrace re-dumps every few seconds until I log in remotely and kill the X server, at which point I have to reboot the machine because the console and display are left unresponsive.

It would be nice to see someone do something with this problem...even if it is passing the buck to nvidia.

Comment 7 Rob 2012-12-20 03:50:36 UTC
FYI...it's Xorg 1.12.14 and it still exhibits the problem.

fc17-x64 westmere machine with gtx460 and lots of memory and disk space.

I use rpmfusion and I had this issue. This thread is the discussion:

https://lists.rpmfusion.org/pipermail/rpmfusion-users/2012-December/thread.html

This link was a revelation to me:

If you're using rpmfusion, try following the advice on this page:

information about the crash

Comment 10 Rob 2012-12-20 21:22:02 UTC
This problem isn't specific to the rpmfusion graphics drivers. The crashes continue, even using the latest from nvidia.com 310.19.

nouveau driver "cough cough" has been thoroughly ripped from the machine in both the driver directories and on the initramfs image so it can't be the culprit.

I run an opengl app several times and eventually it causes the X server to lock up the console. Mouse pointer still moves but that's it. onscreen clock is dead and system requires a remote reboot.

Attached is the complete Xorg.0.log file.
