Description bob 2012-12-11 20:18:26 UTC
, Description of problem:

F18-Beta netinstall CD / anaconda fails to create bootloader information for both BIOS-type and UEFI-type systems.

The result is that although you can perform a netinstall using the CD media, and the installation will boot on the system upon which it was created, the hard disk can not be reliably transferred to another system for deployment.

Specifically, if I perform a netinstall on a UEFI-type box the installation will boot, but if I move the drive to a BIOS-type system the installation will not boot. It would appear that instead of creating the necessary directories and files to boot compatibly with both types of BIOS systems, the netinstall only creates the files for the type of system upon which it has been installed. This hampers deployment in a replicated environment.

Use of the netinstall CD is further frustrated by the fact that I can not get any version of Fedora (16, 17 or 18 beta; all types of installation media) to boot into a GUI on a new UEFI system. (See bugs 884856, 884897, 870585, 885260, 885870, 885936). It is only possible to perform a netinstall in text mode, and the current crippled state of anaconda in text mode does not allow either disk partitioning or package selection by the user.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

F18-beta netinstall ISO.

How reproducible:

Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Perform Netinstall (text mode) on UEFI box.
2. Boot to verify functionality on UEFI box.
3. Move disk to BIOS-type box -- won't boot.

Actual results:

Boot failure.

Expected results:

Boot.

Try kickstart or cobbler or one of the other provisioning tools that exists and is well-supported.

1. One bug per bug report, please.
2. Try the vnc option, which will allow you to do a graphical install over the network on a box whose graphics are not well-supported.
