In the IPA gui windows users and groups that are listed in external groups are just displayed as SIDs. 

Management of windows users and groups when just SIDs are displayed is nearly impossible.  Please resolve all SIDs in the GUI to the domain\username format unless no global catalog server can be reached - or even cache or store the username mapping if necessary

From Gui:

Added adgroup1_external external group
Add external member AD2\adgroup1
Resolved and listed group as adgroup1.test as expected.
