installed f18 beta xfce live; yum update; yum install mate-desktop and some other mate packages; logged out; logged in with mate

no chance to try with @mate yet, but if mate-panel needs a package so it doesn't just crash then that should be one if it's dependencies, right ?
so I still consider this a bug.

You didn't provide the steps to reproduce just an abrt stacktrace.
