Description of problem:
I was reading e-mail when suddenly Evolution's status bar exploded with a large number of tasks. The application then became unresponsive and I had to kill it with "evolution --force-shutdown".

Thanks for a bug report. This is similar to bug #888172, thus I'm closing this as a duplicate of it. Please check the comments there for a possible workaround (by disabling a sender's photo lookup).
