Description dsandif 2003-05-14 15:40:08 UTC
Description of problem:

Hi Guys, got a question for you,

I have a Dell Inspirion 8000 laptop witha dual boot setup. Originally ,

it had Linux 7.2 and Win98 on it, but we just upgraded the Linux side to

RedHat Linux 8.0. Now when it boots up, it will go through its check ok,

but when it brings up the login command line,
***********************************
RedHAt Linux 8.0 (Psyche)
Kernel 2.4.18-14 on an i686

benioff login:
***********************************

the screen starts to flicker 2 or 3 times, then it goes into a blue
background with a grey window that has the following message:

***********************************************************************************************************************

"I cannot start the X server (your graphical
interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly.
Would you like to view the X server
output to diagnose the problem?"

At this point I say "yes" and I then get the next menu:

************************************************************************************************************************

XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (Red Hat Linux release: 4.2.0-72) /X Window Syste

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
         reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: Linux 2.4.18-11smp i686 [ELF]
Build Host: daffy.perf.redhat.com

Fatal server error:

***********************************************************************************************************************

the next window ask me the following:

Would you like to try to run the X configruation program?
Note that you will need the root password for this.
**********************************************************************************************************************

When I try this, this is what I get:

**********************************************************************************************************************

*ddcprobe returned bogus values:
ID: None
Name: None
Horizsync: None
VertiSync: None

Couldn't start X server, trying with a fresh configuration
************************************************************************************************************************

After trying this twice, it will say that it is going to try and restart

the X server again and then the whole cycle starts again

I am including the Log file, XFree86.0.log so you can see the full log
message.

Thanks,

D-

Comment 2 Mike A. Harris 2003-05-21 16:11:21 UTC
Please run "redhat-config-xfree86 --reconfig". You seem to be using an
XFree86 3.3.6 config file created by Xconfigurator, which wont work.

Also, please don't cut and paste huge bodies of text into bug reports as it
makes them very hard to read and follow the progress of. Use the file
attachment feature of bugzilla to attach files instead.

I'm going to close this bug NOTABUG for now, however if the problem continues
after trying my above suggestion, please open a new bug report (instead of
reopening this long one) and use the file attachment feature to attach your
new log and new config file generated by the redhat-config-xfree86 config
tool which is the officially supported config tool now in Red Hat Linux.

Thanks.
