This function is provided by PackageKit... and depending on what plugin(s) you need, you also have to have rpmfusion or similar 3rd party repos enabled.

Is PackageKit installed?

Is rpmfusion enabled?

What plugin was it looking for?

Comment 2 John Mev 2013-02-10 12:01:51 UTC
Hi

Yes they are. Just that the notification should tell that this video is a xxxxx file type and nedd yyyyyy codec for playing.

I know that Fedora does not embed non-free stuff. I would be fine just to explain and not just tell "couldn't find plugin".

Thanks for reading

Comment 3 Christoph Wickert 2013-02-10 13:17:55 UTC
parole only supports gnome-codec-install but not PackageKit's functionality for requesting and installing codices. I've already complained back in January, not I asked a second time in https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8469

Unless upstream implements this functionality, there is not much we can do (except having someone contribute a patch).

Comment 4 Christoph Wickert 2013-02-10 13:18:24 UTC
Forgot to say: gnome-codec-install only works with apt.

Tried running under F19, with parole-0.5.0-1.fc19.x86_64 .

I get a- window saying:
"Additional software is required
Parole needs MPEG-4 Video decoder to play this file.
It can be installed automatically"
** Message: PackageKit: xid = 44040285
** Message: PackageKit: Codec nice name: MPEG-4 Video decoder
** Message: PackageKit: ignoring field named parsed
** Message: PackageKit: field is: mpegversion, type: gint
** Message: PackageKit: field is: systemstream, type: gboolean
** Message: PackageKit: structure: gstreamer0.10(decoder-video/mpeg)(mpegversion=4)(systemstream=false)()(64bit)
** Message: PackageKit: Did not install codec: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files

Chose install.
Got these messages on the console:
"** Message: PackageKit: xid = 44040285
** Message: PackageKit: Codec nice name: MPEG-4 Video decoder
** Message: PackageKit: ignoring field named parsed
** Message: PackageKit: field is: mpegversion, type: gint
** Message: PackageKit: field is: systemstream, type: gboolean
** Message: PackageKit: structure: gstreamer0.10(decoder-video/mpeg)(mpegversion=4)(systemstream=false)()(64bit)
** Message: PackageKit: Did not install codec: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.PackageKit was not provided by any .service files"

Following parole's Edit/Plugins menu, I was led to the author's e-mail, and the project website at http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/applications/parole . Unfortunately, the information provided there seems mainly of interest to developers, perhaps those willing to use Ubuntu as a workaround to locate needed codecs.
