Have you somehow disabled NetworkManager? Are there any logs of a crashing NetworkManager process?

No I hadn't disabled NM and I don't think it had crashed as well, although it was a while ago - nearly a year ago... Also am no longer running F18 - am on F19 now (and will likely upgrade to F20 soon) - and haven't seen this since - am happy to close it.
