Description Parag Nemade 2013-06-26 06:40:39 UTC
Description of problem:
we recently found some issues in F19 DVD media where gnu-free-fonts when removed fallback comes to smc-meera-fonts but it failed to render I guess so lohit-malayalam-fonts package added into kickstart. See bug 977764.

Then we found that Malayalam language Orthography coverage is FULL for FreeSerif.ttf and Lohit-Malayalam.ttf

but Meera.ttf is not having complete coverage. See
"missingValues":"U+0d44 (ൄ), U+0d62 (ൢ), U+0d63 (ൣ), U+0d70 (൰), U+0d71 (൱), U+0d72 (൲), U+0d73 (൳), U+0d74 (൴), U+0d75 (൵)"

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
lohit-malayalam-fonts-2.5.3-1.fc19.noarch
smc-meera-fonts-5.0.1-5.fc19.noarch

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results:
Meera is defualt with 90% coverage

Expected results:
should have Lohit Malayalam as a default as it covers 100% glyphs.

U+0D44, U+0D62 and U+0D63 (Vedic)

U+0D70 to U+0D75 are Malayalam fraction

These are recently added to Unicode and not frequently used characters. Even Malayalam orth file in fontconfig does not list these characters.

So missing these characters does not affect much making Meera as a default fonts.

On the other hand community prefers Meera (Traditional script) fonts. So we should move with it.

But i think having Lohit Malayalam in the default installation will be good. As it provide more coverage and also support Malayalam new script, so does not make redundancy with Meera.

So we should install Lohit Malayalam as well but Meera should be default font for Malayalam.

I'm curious: there seem to be two differing references of coverage here. Parag is using some unspecified orthography file, and that differs from fontconfig's orth file? Do we have another bug here?

Comment 3 Parag Nemade 2013-06-26 09:49:13 UTC
I thought fontaine is easy to use tool to find language coverage from a font. Looks its not the case then.

Paul,
How can we check only orthography coverage for any font?

Comment 4 Paul Flo Williams 2013-06-26 10:26:56 UTC
Fontconfig's view of the language coverage:

fc-scan -f '%{lang}' <filename>

Comment 5 Parag Nemade 2013-06-26 13:39:57 UTC
Thanks pravins for your conclusion about Malayalam rendering issue in bug 977764.

I just used fc-validate and found all the three fonts supports "Satisfy the coverage for ml language". So, I don't see this bug is valid anymore but definitely we got some valuable information here.
