It seems it's impossible to achieve Ajax behavior in Spring Portlet v2.5 applications because it's based on Portlet 1.0 Specification. This means you can't use ResourceRequest (which is needed in order to have partial rendering), this API was introduced in Portlet 2.0 Spec. 

Thomas, do you think we should mention this issue in the documentation?
