Description of problem: I installed skype via "yum localinstall skype-4.2.0.11-fc16.i586.rpm". Looked OK but audio didn't work at all. The Sound manager showed skype was talking to pulseaudio - but nothing came out Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. install skype on F20 2. run 3. Actual results: no audio - and no errors from skype or pulseaudio Expected results: audio Additional info: I fixed it. I found the following doc http://negativo17.org/handbrake-skype-fedora-20/ So adding an environment variable fixed skype for me and apparently HandBrake for others. This is more a "FYI" than a bugreport, but I do wonder if the pulseaudio API should be so vulnerable to such things? Such a trivial fix makes me wonder if this could be generalized as a solution?
Indeed, well-known skype issue, see http://community.skype.com/t5/Linux/Crackling-and-unusable-sound-with-pulseaudio-4-0-proposed-fix/td-p/1683361 for a workaround until skype itself is fixed properly
