Description of problem: gnome-shell is the one of the highest mem users on the system, and it's also used up a lot of cpu time -- more than even firefox. Let me know if I can get any debug output.
Do you use the Gnome Weather extension as reported by Bug 960381? Does this get worse over time? Do you use Google Chrome?
