Description of problem:
Kernel is 2.6.32-431 and not Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6.5 GA (None) Error: kernel is tainted (value = 268435456)

We use below configuration
Test machine: Intel QM87 chipset+intel CPU i7-4800MQ
OS: RHEL server v2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 GNOME2.28.2
Test suite: v7-1.6.4-22.el6, v7-server-1.6.4-22.el6, dt-15.14-2.EL6, stress-0.18.8-1.3.EL6, lmbench-3.0a7-6a.EL6

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install RHEL server v2.6.32-431.el6.x86_64 GNOME2.28.2 to test machine
2. Install v7 Test suite
3. Run info test as below:
v7 run --test=info --debug=low

Actual results:
Fail

Expected results:
Pass

Comment 1 Rob Landry 2013-12-09 19:50:58 UTC
Hi,

The 1st error happens because the test suite could not reach out to the partner ftp site and the current level of the hwcert-client-info package has not been installed. With either hwcert-client-info-1.6.5-32 installed or a route to ftp://partners.redhat.com this issue should clear up.

The 2nd error, kernel taint of value 268435456 is unsupported hardware. I'll need to verify but I believe the kernel/boot logs should contain a message about which hardware caused this.

Hi Rob,

Could you please check and update to us?

Comment 4 Rob Landry 2014-01-08 20:24:00 UTC
Hi,

I took a look again in the logs and actually it looks like something triggered a slowpath taint in the kernel from the X driver. The first time X is run, it comes up untainted, encounters a warning, and then slowpath taints. Subsequent runs are then appear as tainted.

Jul 8 18:05:10 unused kernel: WARNING: at drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_pm.c:4008 gen6_gt_check_fifodbg+0x41/0x60 [i915]() (Not tainted)

Jul 8 18:05:10 unused kernel: WARNING: at drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_pm.c:4008 gen6_gt_check_fifodbg+0x41/0x60 [i915]() (Tainted: G W --------------- )

To verify this is the info test kernel is tainted issue, if you can set the default runlevel to 3, and then reboot to clear the taint. This should prevent X from starting @ boot allowing the kernel taint value to be checked without X being started.

The taint value can be checked via: "cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted" which should return 0. The info test could then be run via "hwcert-backend run --test info" which should then pass as the kernel isn't tainted.

If all of that checks out, X can be started with the "startx" command followed by rerunning the above kernel taint check and info run which would be expected to now fail. This would help us prove or disprove the X slowpath is the cause of kernel tainting + info test run failure.

If it is proven to be the cause, the next things to do would be to the RHEL6.5 Xorg driver package and retest, followed by the RHEL6.5 kernel upgrade.

If either/both of those clear up the tainting issue we have our solution and will need to discuss options for how to proceed with the certification.

If the taint cause in confirmed but the upgrade(s) do(es) not resolve I can get the trace over to our X engineers so they can pin it down further.

Hi Rob,

I changed default runlevel to 3, but the tained is still 268435456.

I do below steps, please check if any problem:

1. # vim /etc/inittab
     id:3:initdefault:
   # runlevel
     N 3
2. Reboot machine
3. OS is boot to text mode. After login with root user, run commands:
   # runlevel
     N 3
   # cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted
     268435456

Comment 6 Rob Landry 2014-01-14 23:23:10 UTC
Hi,

Hrm, bummer.

Your actions and the resulting behavior sounds correct unfortunately it's still tainted and that's not so good. If X didn't come up yet, then it should not be X that caused it.

Actually the graphical boot brings up X which would be before the graphical login. To disable the graphical boot if you remove the "rhgb quiet" from the kernel options in grub that should avoid X starting.

If that doesn't remove the taint, can you check in dmesg or /var/log/messages after a reboot to see if there is any indication about what caused that taint?

Ahh, that would do it.

Can you try the kernel at this errata?

support.http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2013-1801.html

For actual certification testing I will need to be verify some items but the above should resolve the taint and verifying that will help ensure we're good to go.

Hi Rob,

It's great.

After update to Kernel is 2.6.32-431.1.2, tainted error is disappeared.
But below error happens during info test:

Subtest: Kernel - Check OS kernel build, version
+ rpm -ql kernel-2.6.32-431.1.2.el6
Error: Kernel is 2.6.32-431.1.2 and not Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6.5 GA (None)
Boot Parameters: ro root=UUID=8248314f-3fc6-49d7-9151-3d94a1b7d1a0 rd_NO_LUKS KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us LANG=en_US.UTF-8 rd_NO_MD SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 crashkernel=129M@0M rd_NO_LVM rd_NO_DM
FAIL

So would you please tell where can we get the formal release redhat ISO image which contains this updated kernel?

Hi,

Sorry for the delay in response, can you install? I hadn't initially noticed it but your run says (None) for the 6.5 kernel GA version. This package provides the 6.5 kernel version to the test suite.

ftp://partners.redhat.com/a166eabc5cf5df158922f9b06e5e7b21/hwcert/RHEL6/hwcert-client-info/1.6.5/32.el6/noarch/hwcert-client-info-1.6.5-32.el6.noarch.rpm

I have not yet verified, but I am hoping this changes the error[fail] to warning[pass] when using the errata kernel.

BTW,

Thanks for your effort on this. With this feedback we have drafted instructions for how to certify with this combination of hardware and RHEL6 prior to an ISO image being available. These instructions should be out shortly.

Also, unfortunately I'm not able to provide information about future releases in Bugzilla. Do you have a regular contact @ RH for this type of information?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your help.

I installed hwcert-client-info-1.6.5-32.el6.noarch.rpm and confirmed it can make the test pass as your discription.

BTW, can we use this tool package for formal RH HWcert?

>>Yes, we have TAM of RH, and I will contact him about ISO image release.
