Description of problem:
PHP crashes when calling SphinxClient::buildExcerpts( array $docs ,
string $index , string $words [, array $opts ] ) with any
configuration option set in $opt array parameter using PECL sphinx
package version: 1.0.0

Version 1.2 has some other bugs too, so consider updating to 1.3.0 for EPEL and Fedora too.

php-pecl-sphinx is no more in EPEL.
